European Liberal Democrats call for reality check on current Constitutional crisis3.53.44pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 14th Jun 2006 In a reaction to the outcome of today's vote on the European Parliament's resolution on the next steps for the period of reflection, Andrew DUFF MEP (UK, Lib Dem), Spokesman on Constitutional Affairs for the Liberals and Democrats, said: "It is disappointing that a majority (though less than half of the constituent members) of the European Parliament has shown itself to be almost as paralyzed by the constitutional crisis as the heads of government." "My colleagues and I opposed the motion before the House today as it took no account of our amendments that recognise the present reality." "An improved text, with more modern and responsive common policies and more efficient and democratic governing structures will surely stand a better chance of getting the backing of public opinion across the EU than the present text." "Nine member states have made it clear that they cannot or will not ratify the 2004 constitutional treaty. Unless the institutions are prepared to modify it, they risk undermining the political foundations of the European Union." ENDS Notes to Editors Parliament's resolution was approved by 347 votes in favour to 212 against with 70 abstentions.
