Duff Accuses Stuart Of Betraying European Constitution

12.00.00am GMT Mon 8th Dec 2003

Commenting on the recent pamphlet by Gisela Stuart on the European Constitution, Andrew Duff reacted by saying:

"I read the pamphlet by Gisela Stuart with more sadness than astonishment. From the outset, Stuart failed to do her duty as representatives of the national parliaments on the Convention's Praesidium. Instead, she faithfully received her brief from Number 10. It is a pity that she is cheating, not only on the Convention, but also on the Prime Minister.

"Mr Blair's negotiating position at the IGC this coming weekend, will be weakened by this betrayal of trust. The fact is that the outcome of the Convention, which the IGC is expected to endorse, is a great step forward for parliamentary democracy and the rule of law at the European Union level.

"The British national interest lies squarely with the new Constitution."
