In response to the decision by the Foreign Secretary Jack Straw not to allow the European Commission to inform the British public about what is in the European Constitution. Liberal Democrat Euro MP for the East of England said
"Jack Straw's decision to stop the Commission from informing the British public about the Constitution is pathetic.
"Britain will never be able to make up its mind about Europe unless it hears the truth about the European Union. Apparently this government is no more prepared to allow the truth to be spoken than its Tory predecessors.
"One wonders what Mr Straw is afraid of. Is it parliamentary democracy and the rule of law? Or is it fundamental rights? Or is it that Europe will be better able under the Constitution to stand up to George W. Bush?
"Frightened of its own shadow on Europe and craven to populist nationalism, if it goes on like this Tony Blair's government is set to lose the referendum campaign. This is a pity - for Britain and for Europe."
