East of England Euro MP Andrew Duff is backing Sir Menzies Campbell as leader of the Liberal Democrats. In a statement today, he said:

"Ming Campbell has the experience, authority and panache to be a very good leader of the party. I have offered him my backing in his leadership bid.

"I know that Campbell will encourage a lively and confident political debate within the party about the future of the country. Under his leadership the Liberal Democrats will mark themselves out as the party of reform, not least on Europe. His record on Iraq has been outstanding.

"I also want to pay tribute to Charles Kennedy. He leaves the leadership at a time when our prospects of making further gains in local, national and European elections have never been better. The whole party in the East of England will wish Charles well for the future."
